As an experienced children’s nurse, Michelle Dady has seen the positive impact that immediate first aid response can have on children’s lives. Michelle plans to pass on her skills and knowledge to parents, carers and children, with the launch of Mini First Aid Milton Keynes and Northampton.

Michelle talks about the vital importance of knowing first aid:

“Even knowing how to put someone in the recovery position and how to get help can save lives. I have seen how frightening it can be for parents when they do not have any first aid knowledge. Providing that support and training is such a rewarding part of my job, whether for parents, carers or for children.”

Michelle has worked in a wide variety of paediatric nursing roles over the last 25 years, including paediatric intensive care. She currently works as a Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, which involves teaching families about diabetes and how to manage their child’s condition. Michelle also trains staff in schools, nurseries and other childcare settings about diabetes.

Michelle has dealt with emergency situations whilst at work, but knows how different it can be when accidents happen at home. She talks about her own personal experiences:

“We just never know when that first aid training might be needed. Giving first aid in your home or out and about is completely different to dealing with things within a hospital environment.

I remember my youngest daughter having a door slammed on her hand and the end of her little finger hanging off. Dealing with that emergency in my house with my own child was scary and emotional.

When my eldest child was a baby, she had a high temperature and had been irritable with her last feed. She suddenly developed a non-blanching rash on her legs whilst I was changing her nappy. Knowing the signs of meningitis was critical in getting her help immediately. Luckily, she did not have bacterial meningitis, but she did have a urinary tract infection which had caused a raging temperature and needed treatment with antibiotics as well as follow-on investigations.

I believe everyone should understand how to give immediate first aid and how to get help.”
